The first day of the rest of your life (For Elena and Ric)

Damon was torn on whether any of them should be going to the stupid Founder's Party. There were far too many of them and, honestly, nothing good came of them. But Elena did need to get out, to get on with life or whatever. Damon wasn't sure what that would look like, but he felt like he needed to help her figure that out.

Maybe part of it was the thrill of deciding something--anything--with Ric, even if they hadn't told anyone, hadn't discussed when to tell anyone, or how or...whatever. It didn't matter right now. Elena was hurting and, if he was honest, so was he. Whatever else...Stefan was his brother and he loved him and watching all he'd accomplished fall apart again hurt. No Lexi to pull him back this time, either. She was the only one who ever had, but thanks to him, she wouldn't be fixing things this time.

It seemed like Stefan didn't want to be fixed.

Damon would be damned--more damned?--if he let his brother take Elena down with him.

Which was why he was letting himself into her house and putting coffee on, and starting to bang pots around to figure out what they should make to go to the party.

Ric brushed his thumb over the line of Damon's jaw. "I'll have to look at a calendar to get dates, but I'm never more than a couple of days off. You have anywhere particular you want to go, but haven't been?"

He considered for a moment. "I haven't been to DC or Baltimore in a while. And not to New York since the 70s..."

"Can you think of anywhere you've never been?"

[prodigalsavior]

"That I want to go?" Damon arched an eyebrow. "Not really..."

He'd never been to either pole, or Siberia. He didn't really want to, either.

"...Can you think of somewhere you enjoy that you haven't been in fifty years? Or barring that the place you want to go, but haven't been in the longest?"

New Orleans came immediately to mind, and he immediately tossed it aside. It was apparently even more loaded than he'd thought when he just thought Charlotte was there.

"...I'll think about it?"

"Okay." He kissed Damon on the forehead. "Let me know what you come up with, when you come up with something?"

Damon smiled a little. "Is there anywhere you want to go?"

"My goal here's to get you out of Mystic Falls and spend some time with you... If you don't have anything you want, maybe back to Charleston?"

Damon had suggested three different possibilities, and, really, New York had been 40 years, but he just gave him a smile. "Charleston sounds good."

Ric shrugged, awkwardly. "If you can't come up with somewhere you haven't been, and that history isn't going to be following you, I really don't care. The point was just to get you out of here. Not for you to humor me. Just forget it."

Damon frowned. "...What just happened?"

"I don't know how to make this better."

[prodigalsavior]

"Hey..." Damon reached out and cradled his jaw. "There's nothing here you need to fix. We can go somewhere, just us. I don't care where we go, or where we are, so long as we're together."

There might not be anything there that he needed to fix, but there was a lot that he wanted to. Especially when he realized how much of what there was here was him. "Anywhere. Seriously, just out of this town and somewhere I can take you to dinner, open doors for your, maybe kiss you in public and not worry about everyone else for a little while." Maybe it would knock some barriers down, but even saying that, he was half cringing at himself. Because he hated himself for needing it, or asking for it.

Damon watched him for a long moment then smiled a bit. "Well, if that's what you want, DC or New York are our best close bets. We'll just blend in there--never get a second look."

[thisismybar]

"That might be too easy...." He smiled, wryly. "But maybe it's a start. D.C's closer. Could give us more time, without having to do the traveling."

[prodigalsavior]

"Well, if you want a bit of a challenge, we could go to Richmond, instead. Check out the Richmond vampire legend and run around Hollywood Cemetery and such. It's a city and no one knows us, so less attention than here, but it's still, you know. In Virginia."

[thisismybar]

"I think it might still be big enough to limit the risk of running into anyone you know, and far enough away that no one from here's going to stumble across us. I'm not so sure it's far enough away to keep people from calling us back, though...."

Damon shook his head, back to amused. "You think anywhere is going to be far enough to not call us back? There are three Originals in town whose intentions we still don't know."

"If you don't think we're going to get a break of any sort in the foreseeable future, or ever, I think we should probably just spend the money on alcohol." He was a little wry and teasing, recognized Damon's point, but it felt like he was starting to hit the wall. From a couple of directions. Starting to hit a corner? "Otherwise, Richmond's fine."

Damon frowned a little, uncertainty hitting again. "I just meant..." He shook his head. "We can go whenever you want, wherever you're comfortable."

"No." He stopped, and took a breath. "Tell me what you did mean. I think I'm spinning mental wheels, here...." And not getting anywhere. Too rattled by Elena and declarations and trying to not make Damon feel like a dirty secret and protect him and his own discomfort and. Yeah, he wasn't getting anywhere. "Please, help me out."

Damon lifted his hands and let them fall, helplessly. "I don't know...You say you want to go somewhere, you ask me where I want to go, but every place I suggest...you find something wrong with it. When I ask you where you want to go, you won't suggest somewhere. So...I don't know what you want me to say, or us to do..."

"Okay...." He tried to get his brain in gear. "There wasn't anything wrong with the places you mentioned. I was originally trying to find somewhere you hadn't been. That's all that was wrong with them. Then I thought I was doing something wrong and you didn't actually want to go, or you thought I was trying to hide you, or were ticked off about me wanting to get away somewhere, to try to force this thing through. Or shooting the idea down, yourself, when you mentioned being called back. So, let's start over?"
